Give a city center a new beating heart? It’s possible! But what are the effects?

In 1998 the first thoughts arose about a rigorous approach to the center area of Zaandam. Looking back, they worked on the center area for about fifteen years.

Central objective: a city center where people live, work and re-create, a city center where the inhabitants of Zaanstad are proud of and where they want to stay. By developing the entire area in mutual coherence, the municipality wants to make the hidden quality visible and make better use of the potential.

Perception and appreciation of the center area
Various studies show that the center development has had a positive effect on visitor numbers, appreciation, and the length of stay.
• Effect number of visitors: Increase from 149,000 per week in 2005 to 183,300 weeks in 2015. Increase of 23%
• Effect of the visitor’s stay: longer than 2 hours in the center: an increase from 6% in 2005 to 47% in 2017.
• In 2005, 47% of the respondents rated the center area as (very) good at 92% in 2013. In 2017, the center is valued at an average of 7.5, of which 11% has even given a 10 as a figure.
